About the Yarns

Wools

The wool used for hand-dyeing the Indigo Moon Yarn line is 100% merino which has been worsted spun with a tight twist to minimize pilling.  It is a soft yarn with great elasticity which provides great stitch definition and easy knitting.  Both sport wt and fingering weight yarns are available.  This superwash merino is machine washable and dryable – though I suggest to keep your garment as fresh and new looking as possible, air drying is still the best option.

Silks

The muga silk yarn which I hand-dye is 100% wild muga silk.  The muga silkworm, which is a relative of the Tussah worm, is farmed in only one place on earth and that is the rich Brahmaputra River valley in eastern India.  This handspun yarn has wonderful irregularities and the golden colour (due to the high tannin content in the leaves the silkworms eat)  provides a lovely warm base.

Muga silk production supports the Assamese in their silk tradition which went into serious decline with clearcutting of forests for tea production.  The natural dyes I use come from around the world supporting communities that have decided to continue their traditional art.  Availability of natural dyes and the muga silk yarn are subject to seasonality and weather conditions.  Both the muga silk and the dyes keep the forests alive by allowing the people in the area to earn a living with the trees standing…rather than clearcutting for plantations, grazing land or condos.

  • All yarn is hand-dyed in small batches providing colour variation within and between skeins.
  • Muga silk weight and yardage approximate.
  • Wholesale inquiries welcome.
